The Alice Network by Kate Quinn

In an enthralling new historical novel from national bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women—a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947—are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.

1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She’s also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie’s parents banish her to Europe to have her “little problem” taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.

1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she’s recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she’s trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the “Queen of Spies”, who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy’s nose.

Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn’t heard in decades, and launches them both on a mission to find the truth…no matter where it leads.

MY THOUGHTS

I loved this book. I listened to the audiobook of it and it was 47 chapters long which at first i thought oh my god but i am so glad i did. I have since found out that one of the characters in the book Louise de Bettignies or Alice Dubois was a real person which adds to the story. But this book has a dual timeline story of Charlie st. Clair in 1947 who is searching for her cousin Rose and Eve Gardiner who Charlie goes to but the other timeline is Eves during 1915 when she is chosen to be a spy in France and her relationship with some of the people there. The storyline tells you up to the present day for both of them then add in the love interest for Charlie Eve’s driver Finn you get to follow their romance from the first time they meet to later in the book when they are married with a kid who Charlie just happens to be pregnant with when they all meet. Altogether i loved this book and would 100% recommend people to read it and you will also hopefully love it.

  1. Hello hello! First off, YAY thank you for reviewing this book! It’s one of my all-time favs! And Eve is such a bad-ass oh gosh, I admire her so much!

(SPOILER ish?) Though as much as I love this book, I am a bit sceptical about the romance between Charlie and Finn? Or maybe I am too obsessed with the slow-burn ones and not the fast-paced types. How did you find it?

Thanks again for the quick review!!

    1. Hi there thank you for reading my review and replying i liked the romance between Charlie and Finn although i am like you and thought it was rushed but i suppose in those days it was a normal kind of thing. I really liked the friendship between eve and Charlie though and listening to Eve’s back story i still recommend the book to everyone if they ask for book recommendations on social media.
